Food intolerances and allergies

Episode 30: Allergy and Intolerance 101

Today’s podcast is such a good one as I speak to Brittyn Coleman MS, RDN/LD, CLT Aka Autism Dietician

Brittyn has been gluten free for 20 years and specializes in gut health for children, especially those with Autism. She dives into the difference between an allergy and an intolerance and their impact on the body. You will hear about the difference between lactose free and the protein in milk, casein, which often times is the culprit of GI issues. She also shares how food sensitivities are more common than food allergies and, in Brittyn’s own words, how to “Follow your gut and advocate for yourself.”

Have you ever been to a doctor who makes you feel like you don’t know what you’re talking about and rushes you out of their office?? Well, I have been to way too many of those kinds of appointments.

Sadie has had red rashes and bloody eczema patches her entire life. I have seen several doctors who have tested her for so many things. The last time we went in, the doctor assured me it was environmental allergies… until we got those results back and then the doctor quickly claimed it was a heat/cold rash. His solution? To not let her out in the sun or take a bath. I just couldn’t believe that either.

I have always thought I should have her go dairy free even though the allergy tests claimed that she was fine with dairy. Last month I decided that I was going to give it a try regardless… and guess what… yep, her eczema has not only improved but has completely gone away!!! I seriously still can not believe it! What a miracle! But what is it that the doctors were missing?
